CASE SUMMARY

In mid 1985, a 38 year old mother of four was savagely beaten to death behind the blacked out windows of the adult store where she worked – located in the city of Swansea, on the south coast of Wales.

The murder was so brutal, the victim was scalped and left with her jaw barely attached.

Among the growing crowd of on-lookers at the scene, a police videographer captured two local men – brothers known to be unemployed, petty criminals who spent their days roaming the city, cider in hand.

The pair were soon arrested after witnesses alleged to have seen them close to the scene on the day of the killing, following which one confessed to the crime.

Despite the confession being retracted and there being no physical evidence to indicate they were guilty, the brothers were given life sentences.

However after spending 7 years behind bars it was determined they were victims of a corrupt police investigation, during which evidence had been tampered with.

The convictions were quashed, tarnishing the reputation of South Wales Police and forcing the hunt for the real killer to start from square one.
