CASE SUMMARY

In 2005, the dead body of a young woman was found in a lake in Bedford, a market town in England. She was quickly identified as a 26 year old woman living locally that had been reported missing several weeks prior.

No cause of death could be determined, and the victim showed no signs of a struggle or having suffered any type of assault. CCTV of the victim minutes before her death was recovered, in which she appeared to be carrying a bag later retrieved from the home of her boyfriend, Nico Bento.

This evidence would result in the man being given a life sentence for murder, however the conviction would be overturned a few years later when expert witness testimony was proved to be flawed. The expert in question (Casey Caudle) would go on to take their own life after their work was publicly discredited.

Police would appear to claim a murderer was walking the streets in a press release after the quashed conviction, and a lawsuit followed. Over 15 years later, what happened to Bedford’s ‘lady in the lake’ remains a mystery.
